On May 28, according to a report by Korean media outlet ETnews on the 27th, Samsung Display (SDC) is building a pilot production facility for Micro LED displays for smartwatches at its A2 campus in Asan, Chungcheongnam-do.
Sources familiar with the matter say the facility will include key Micro LED process equipment such as transfer, bonding, inspection, and repair. Samsung Display has been selecting equipment suppliers since late last year through early this year, and the equipment is expected to be installed within this year. Once the pilot line is completed this year, the company is also considering the possibility of investing in mass production as early as the second half of next year.
Samsung Display first started its Micro LED development project for smartwatches back in 2023. Industry analysts believe the company wants to leverage the technology it has already developed and speed up commercialization by testing the Micro LED process directly in its own factory.
