Hey everyone, big news from ASUS today-they're officially pulling out of the smartphone game. Yeah, you heard that right. On January 19th, during their year-end company party, ASUS Chairman Jonney Shih dropped the bomb: starting from 2026, they won't be making any new Zenfone or ROG Phone models anymore. But don't panic if you're already an owner; they're promising to keep supporting all the existing phones with full warranties, software updates, and customer service. No one's getting left high and dry.

So, why the sudden exit? Jonney explained it pretty straightforwardly-they're shifting their focus and resources to stuff they're really good at, like PCs, laptops, and all these new AI gadgets and devices. Makes sense, right? The smartphone world is brutal these days. Storage prices are skyrocketing, which jacks up costs for everyone, and ASUS has already been tweaking their product plans, sales strategies, and supply chains to try and keep things affordable without skimping on quality. But honestly, it sounds like they're just done fighting that uphill battle.

news-1-1

ASUS has been in phones for a while now. They jumped in back in 2014 with the Zenfone line, which was all about giving people solid, high-value phones without the crazy price tags-especially popular overseas. Then in 2018, they went big on gaming with the ROG Phone series, partnering up with Tencent to make them even better for mobile esports fans. Those were cool phones; I remember seeing reviews praising the ROG for its beastly specs and cooling systems. But yeah, times change.

This isn't totally out of left field. Whispers about ASUS ditching phones started popping up late last year, around mid-2025. By early January this year, word got out that no new models for 2026, distributors couldn't get stock anymore, and they've even started laying off folks from the phone division. Ouch.

If you think about it, the whole smartphone market is a mess for companies like ASUS. It's not growing like it used to-people are holding onto their phones longer, upgrading every three or four years instead of every one or two. All the big dogs like Apple, Samsung, and maybe Huawei or Xiaomi are gobbling up most of the market share, leaving little room for mid-tier players. It's like survival of the fittest, and ASUS decided to bow out gracefully rather than keep bleeding money.

Personally, it's a bit sad to see them go. Their ROG Phones were unique for gamers, with those shoulder triggers and high-refresh screens. Zenfones were underdogs that punched above their weight. But hey, business is business. If you're an ASUS phone user, you're good for now-just keep an eye on their support pages. And who knows? Maybe they'll surprise us down the line with some AI-phone hybrid or something, but for the foreseeable future, it's PC and AI all the way for them.

What do you think? Will this shake up the market at all, or is it just another casualty in the smartphone wars? Let me know your thoughts!
