Apple just dropped their cheapest MacBook ever - the MacBook Neo, starting at $599 in the US (which works out to about RMB 4,599 in China). This thing came out on March 4, 2026, and honestly, it's the first time in forever that Apple has made a laptop actually aimed at people who don't want to drop a grand or more.

news-1-1

They held hands-on events in Shanghai (first time they've done a spring thing there), plus New York and London, so people could actually play with it right away.

The design is classic Apple aluminum - super thin and light at just 2.7 pounds (about 1.2 kg). Comes in four fun colors: blush pink, indigo blue, citrus yellow, and regular silver. The screen is a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, looks sharp enough for everyday stuff, gets up to 500 nits bright.

Inside it's running the A18 Pro chip - yeah, the same one from the iPhone 16 Pro series, not one of the usual M chips. Base model has 8GB memory and starts with 256GB storage. Apple says it's way faster than typical budget Windows laptops for normal things like browsing or streaming, and up to 3x quicker on AI tasks (like fancy photo edits done right on the device).

Battery lasts up to 16 hours, which is solid. You get a 1080p webcam, decent speakers with Spatial Audio, the usual Magic Keyboard and big trackpad, plus two USB-C ports (one is faster USB 3, the other is the old slow USB 2 speed), and a headphone jack. No fan, so it's dead silent.

news-1-1

It runs full macOS (the latest Tahoe version), works great with your iPhone, and has all the Apple Intelligence AI features.

Pre-orders kicked off immediately, and it officially goes on sale March 11, 2026. Students get a discount down to $499 (around RMB 3,999 in China), and in China you can stack national subsidies or education deals to push the real price even lower.

Basically, Apple is finally going after the budget crowd hard - students, families, anyone who wants into the Mac world without breaking the bank. Whether the compromises (like only 8GB RAM forever, those uneven USB ports, slightly bigger bezels) matter to you probably depends on what you're using it for. But at this price? It's kinda hard to argue with.
