According to the latest numbers from IDC (that big research company that tracks this stuff), the whole smart glasses world shipped 4.296 million units in the third quarter of 2025. That's a massive 74.1% jump compared to the same time last year.
The real explosion came from the audio-focused smart glasses – you know, the ones that look like regular sunglasses or normal glasses but let you play music, take calls, and even snap photos or short videos just by touching the frame. That category alone shipped almost 3 million units (2.994 million to be exact) and grew a crazy 287.5% year-over-year. People clearly love this kind of convenient, not-too-weird wearable tech.
On the other hand, the more heavy-duty AR/VR smart glasses (the ones with screens inside that show digital stuff) actually dropped 23.2% to 1.3 million units. It seems a lot of folks are still not quite ready for bulkier, more immersive headsets in everyday life.
Meta is basically owning this market right now. They grabbed a huge 75.7% share in Q3 thanks to the new Ray-Ban Meta second generation, the sporty Oakley versions, and some fresh display-focused models. These things are flying off the shelves because they look good and actually feel useful.
Here are a few shots of the popular Ray-Ban Meta glasses people are actually wearing out in the real world:

Chinese brands are catching up fast and doing really well internationally. Four Chinese companies – Xiaomi, RayNeo/Thunderbird (雷鸟), Xreal, and Viture – all made it into the global top five. That's pretty impressive when you think about how quickly they're moving.
Looking at different regions, almost everywhere is growing strongly. North America, Western Europe, China, and most of Asia-Pacific (excluding China and Japan) all grew more than 50% compared to last year. Western Europe had the biggest jump at 106.5% – people there are really into this stuff.
In China itself, 623,000 pairs shipped in Q3, up 62.3% from last year. The audio/camera style glasses did even better locally, growing almost 80% to 454,000 units.
Bottom line: if you're into lightweight, good-looking smart glasses that basically work like wireless earbuds + tiny camera + AI assistant all in one, this is definitely the category that's taking off right now. The super-futuristic full-AR stuff is still finding its feet, but these everyday smart audio glasses? They're winning big time in 2025.
