Samsung Display Develops New QuantumBlack Film For QD-OLED Panels, Cutting Reflections By 20%

Samsung Display (SDC) announced on March 26 that it has successfully developed a new surface film for its QD-OLED display panels called QuantumBlack. Compared to the previous version, the new film reduces light reflection by 20% and increases surface hardness from 2H to 3H.

Samsung Display explained that in real-world use, ambient light reflecting off the screen can ruin the perception of deep blacks. The new QuantumBlack film is designed to solve this issue and deliver much better black levels in bright environments.

QD-OLED is a self-emissive display technology that can achieve true "pure black" by completely turning off individual pixels. However, in everyday settings with bright room light, reflections on the screen make it hard to see that perfect black. Samsung says it has been working on low-reflection films for QD-OLED panels since the early stages, and this new QuantumBlack version marks a significant improvement.

The company plans to apply the QuantumBlack™ film to all new QD-OLED monitor products launching this year. It reduces reflection by 20% compared to the current film.

 

Good black reproduction is especially important for gaming monitors. Perfect blacks help clearly separate objects from the background, add depth and a sense of three-dimensional space, and create a more immersive gaming experience. The new film also improves durability. Internal tests show that the panel hardness has increased from 2H to 3H. A lower hardness level makes the screen more prone to scratches during moving or cleaning, while 3H offers much better resistance - even scratching with a fingernail won't leave marks.

 

Samsung Display said the QuantumBlack technology will be extended to all new display panel products in 2026. Downstream customers have already given it their own brand names, such as ASUS "BlackShield," Gigabyte "ObsidianShield," and MSI "DarkArmor."
