Samsung Display's 8.6-generation OLED production line (A6) faced technical difficulties last year related to the electrostatic chuck (ESC), according to South Korean media.

The ESC, a key component for holding large glass substrates (2290mm × 2620mm) during vacuum evaporation, reportedly caused problems with substrate adsorption and detachment. Issues included unstable holding, substrate vibration, and even glass breakage in some cases.

Industry sources warned that unresolved problems could delay mass production. Samsung Display plans to start production in Q2 this year and supply about 2 million OLED panels for Apple MacBook Pro in the second half.

However, the company firmly denied any schedule delays, stating that construction is proceeding steadily and mass production will begin as planned. It is currently adjusting helium pressure, electrostatic force, and temperature to improve stability, with yields reportedly reaching the 70% range.

Some analysts note that slower-than-expected growth in the IT OLED market may also lead Samsung to adopt a more cautious production ramp-up.
