March 8 - South Korean media reports indicate that Chinese panel makers are quickly catching up to South Korea in OLED technology, just as they did earlier in the LCD sector.
According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, China's OLED production capacity is projected to overtake South Korea's starting in 2029.
The Gyeonggi Research Institute (a South Korean think tank) assessed that the technological gap between Chinese leader BOE (京东方) and South Korean OLED technology has narrowed to less than one year in certain areas.
Competition is expected to heat up further this year. Chinese companies, including BOE, have completed investments in next-generation 8.6-generation small- and medium-sized OLED lines and are moving toward mass production. Recent updates show BOE's 8.6-gen line in Chengdu has already entered the customer sample verification stage, with mass production still targeted for the second half of 2026.
This accelerating shift is raising concerns in South Korea about maintaining its long-held edge in high-end display technology.
