According to a report by Korean media outlet ZDNET Korea, citing industry sources, Apple has recently asked its two major IT OLED panel suppliers - Samsung Display and LG Display (LGD) - to produce sample panels using their mass-production lines for an upcoming OLED iMac, which is expected to launch between 2029 and 2030.
The report indicates that Samsung Display plans to manufacture samples with a pixel density of 220 PPI using its existing QD-OLED production lines, targeting sample delivery in the second half of 2026. Currently, Samsung's production lines support up to 160 PPI, but earlier this month, its equipment supplier SEMES delivered a new QD-OLED inkjet printing device capable of achieving 220 PPI.
Meanwhile, LG Display intends to use a yet-to-be-commercialized five-stack tandem white OLED (W-OLED) structure - specifically a BGBRG configuration - for its trial panels, instead of the existing four-stack BGBR design. This new approach is expected to result in relatively slower response times compared to the current technology.
